Welcome to Rotherhams electronic Legal Update for Spring 2004.

Our lead article focuses predominantly on the processes and pitfalls relating to purchasing property, whether at auction, privately, or through an agent.  We also discuss intellectual property - a must read if you are in business or contemplating starting one up, we remind you of Pat's expertise in the area of trusts and asset protection in general, and for our regular feature, 'Shelly's Hot Tip', one of my favourite shortcuts in Outlook.

If you wish to provide feedback or request content for future issues I would be more than happy for you to contact me directly.

Until next time, take care.

Shelly

Contemplating Moving House?

Given September is the time when many of you consider selling property, or know someone who is, we have included in this issue two articles relevant to purchasing property.

There are a few traps which are easy to fall into, especially when you have received an offer to purchase your property and are keen to find that replacement dream home prior to Christmas.

Read Buying at Auction and What to Tell an Agent on our website if you would like to know more.

Our Electronic Newsletter Subscription Winner....

Thank you to those of you who subscribed online in time to enter the dinner voucher for two draw (and also to those who have subscribed following the draw!)

It was so lovely to learn that our winners, Paul Burden and Deborah Hill of Christchurch, recently had a new addition to their family.  Not surprisingly they were delighted with their voucher for dinner at Rotherhams of Riccarton.  We hope you have a lovely evening Paul and Deborah.

(If you are wondering, neither Pat nor I have any association with Rotherhams of Riccarton except that the restaurant is in Rotherham Street and our surname is Rotherham!)

Shelly's Hot Tip

You would be surprised how much knowledge on using a computer you gain over time, mostly through trial and error.  I am always keen to learn of ways which will minimise errors as well as save time.

In the first of 'Shelly's Hot Tips' I thought I would share with you what is probably my favourite and most frequently used shortcut in Outlook.  I know this works for Office 2000 and 2003 although I am unsure about earlier versions:

Adding an outside email to Contacts
You are possibly aware that from your Inbox you can right click on an email address (have the email open) and select Add to Outlook Contacts.  This will very conveniently open a new contact, already placing the email address in the appropriate field.  It will even let you know if you have an existing contact with the same email and invite you to amend or replace it.

But it gets better.......with drag 'n drop......

Click and drag the closed email to Contacts and voila!  A new contact will open, with the full email content in the text field.  From here you just need to copy or cut and paste the pertinent contact details to the appropriate fields.  Most senders provide their contact details at the foot of their email.  Give it a try - I'm sure you'll love it.

We're Spreading Our Wings

Many of you may not yet be aware that Rotherhams have opened a branch office in Kaikoura

Pat is visiting once a week and with technology, as far as clients and staff are concerned, it is really an extension of Pat's Christchurch office.

With secure computer links, Pat is able to access our legal documentation and communicates with clients in the usual manner, either via email or telephone.

We are committed to ensuring our standard of service will remain as high as usual irrespective of whether Pat is operating from Christchurch or Kaikoura.

If you happen to be in Kaikoura and need to speak with any of us in Christchurch (or Pat when he is in Kaikoura), we have a free phone number, 0800 KKLegal (0800 555 3425) which you are welcome to use.

The temporary location of our Kaikoura office is 25 Beach Road (beneath the gym on the main road North).  So if you are passing on a Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning and see our bright orange sign on the pavement, pop in and say hello to Pat.

Protecting Your Intellectual Property

Are you in business?

Your business may have a considerable amount of intellectual property ("IP") that is not being adequately safeguarded or utilised.  It may be easier than you think to add considerable value to your business.

If you wish to understand more on identifying potential IP it may be worthwhile taking the time to read our article

Trusts Uncovered

There appears to have been a considerable amount of publicity recently over trusts in general.

Quite often the best time to establish a trust is at the time of purchasing a major asset, although property transfers can occur at a later date, but at extra legal cost.

If you have had discussions regarding trusts, and are unsure of their use, or the appropriate time to establish one, why not give us a call.

One of Pat's specialty areas is asset protection and succession planning.

Pat's experience ranges from advising clients on the options and most suitable structure for protection of the family home or farm, through to complex business structures involving companies and share sale and purchases.

Pat will explain to you in easy to understand language, what you need to know.  He will also work with your accountant or related professional, to ensure the most appropriate outcome for your individual circumstances.

Ask us for our client notes on the family trust, which explain the concept in detail.  Alternatively, contact us to arrange an appointment time to have a chat with Pat about protecting your assets.
