Why You Must Attend Jury Service

The maximum penalty for not attending jury service is a $300 fine.

Jury service is the very cornerstone of New Zealand's justice system.  If insufficient people turn up it may be impossible to select 12 people for a jury, causing postponement of scheduled trials.

Failure to turn up can result in you appearing before a District Court judge yourself (being summonsed) to explain your absence and will likely result in a fine of approximately $150.00.
